A child’s raincoat cast away at Crown Quay is patterned with contour lines and the single symbol of a tent – a home and shelter in a landscape. In actuality not many people choose to make their home on this fringeland. It is largely the preserve of the plant-life and the bees which fertilise their summer blooms, the roosts and nesting grounds of waterfowl, the burrows of rabbits and the webs of the many spiders. In a complicated ecology, this jigsaw of interlocking mutually interdependent fragile parts is so easily put out of kilter by a van load of building rubble from a home conversion in a nice part of the nearby town. Why do we fail to see and understand a place from any perspective but our own?
